Credit cards are a secure payment method that give cardholders access to a line of credit they can borrow from and pay back over time. When used responsibly, they’re a great credit-building tool that can help establish credit, build a positive credit history and help you save money down the road if you need a loan for something like a car or home.
The best credit cards are particularly worth it because they provide long-term value with rewards and perks that aren’t found with other payment methods.

Pros

  • Flat-rate rewards on all purchases and exclusive benefits as an American Express-branded card, which make it easier to recoup the annual fee.
  • Fewer card term restrictions, rates and fees than other Credit One cards for less than perfect credit

Cons

  • $39 annual fee

  • Several cards eligible with the same limited credit score offer better rates and features

Bottom Line

As far as Credit One cards go, the issuer’s Amex-branded card offers deeper rewards and benefits, but other issuers’ rival cards may still be stronger options.

Pros

  • The highest rewards rate of any Credit One card, which is also admirable for cash back cards in general
  • The Credit One more Rewards and Visa Offers + Perks programs may net a little more cash back and online shopping discounts from time to time.

Cons

  • $95 annual fee

  • Credit One’s hybrid prequalification application means you might not receive this card without “good” credit; with a score like that, other unsecured cards may be a better long-term value

Bottom Line

It offers the issuer’s highest rewards rate, but the $95 annual fee, dicey card terms and higher credit need to likely qualify make other cards safer picks.

Highlights

  • Get 5% cash back rewards on the first $5,000 of eligible gas, grocery, internet, cable, satellite TV, and mobile phone service purchases each year, and then 1% thereafter. Plus 1% cash back rewards on all other purchases, terms apply
  • Zero Fraud Liability protects you from unauthorized charges
  • Free Online Credit Score and Credit Report summary, terms apply
  • Automatically earn More Cash Back Rewards for using your Credit One Bank card at participating merchants, terms apply
  • If you are a Covered Borrower under the Military Lending Act, you may get a different offer

Pros

  • No annual fee, so you can keep a larger chunk of your rewards
  • Unlimited 2% cash back on select day-to-day categories

Cons

  • Unlike other Credit One cards, it requires a prime credit score like leading rewards cards do – meaning you could apply for major issuers’ most popular rewards cards instead

  • No flat-rate 1% cash back on purchases outside your bonus categories

Bottom Line

Unlimited 2% cash back on key categories with no yearly fee may offer Credit One’s top rewards, but its requirements and missing flat-rate rewards hobble it versus other issuers.

Highlights

  • No annual fee for qualified applicants. Terms apply.
  • Get 2% cash back rewards on eligible gas and grocery purchases as well as mobile phone, internet, cable, and satellite TV services. Terms apply.

Pros

  • Unlimited 1% cash back on eligible gas, grocery, mobile phone service, internet service and cable/satellite TV purchases
  • Carries “traditional” Visa card benefits, plus the Credit One More Rewards and Visa Offers + Perks programs

Cons

  • $39 annual fee and its rewards aren’t flat-rate, so the fee might be harder to justify
  • It has the same dense terms and fees as other Credit One cards, but the issuer’s American Express card has a better rewards and benefit structure for the same credit score requirement
